Nippin Anand

I am a master mariner and a social scientist with more than two decades of work experience that spans across hands on operations, academic research, consultancy and certification and regulation in the maritime, oil and gas sector. I am currently employed with a leading classification society as a Principal Specialist in Safety Management System. I am extremely passionate about (socio-technical) systems safety, multi-disciplinary thinking (technical and social sciences), resilience and risk management.

Starting from a deck cadet to becoming a master mariner I have worked for more than twelve years at sea. After an accomplished career at sea I took up a master’s degree (distinction) at Cardiff University with a key focus on economics and trade policy in global shipping. Next, I was offered PhD fellowship by the Nippon Foundation of Japan at the Seafarers International Research Centre at Cardiff University. The study was focused on identifying the human and organizational implications of technological advancements at sea. Through this study I have gained a unique insight into behavioural risks and safety issues in the maritime industry.

I have also worked as a research fellow at the University of Nottingham. The project was designed with the view to examining the risk and resilience of UK’s critical national infrastructure. The selection of critical national infrastructure was decided upon seaports due to the country’s dependence on maritime transport for essential critical supplies. The aim was to examine the relationship between risk and resilience with a key focus on human element. During this project, I also followed the wider issues of unsafe incidents in port, navigational risks, and business continuity of port operations.

I am formally qualified for conducting regulatory inspections and management systems audits in the maritime and offshore sector with a special focus on safety management. In addition, I am actively engaged in developing methodologies for (dynamic) risk assessment, incident investigations and safety management systems. I have presented on the topic of safety and risk at various international conferences and seminars.

Linking theory (of safety) with practice keeps me extremely motivated!
